{"id":1025,"date":"2024-10-24T08:34:32","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T08:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diplomat.ie\/?p=1025"},"modified":"2024-10-24T08:34:32","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T08:34:32","slug":"a-fantastic-coup-for-cork-as-crawford-art-gallery-acquires-four-significant-works-for-the-national-collection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diplomat.ie\/index.php\/2024\/10\/24\/a-fantastic-coup-for-cork-as-crawford-art-gallery-acquires-four-significant-works-for-the-national-collection\/","title":{"rendered":"A \u201cfantastic coup\u201d for Cork as Crawford Art Gallery acquires four significant works for the National Collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Cork\u2019s Crawford Art Gallery has acquired two more paintings by one of Ireland\u2019s best-known painters, Se\u00e1n Keating.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Keating\u00a0paintings\u00a0are amongst four\u00a0artworks\u00a0recently acquired at auction by Crawford Art Gallery for the National Collection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sean Keating\u2019s\u00a0<em>Elijah with the Ravens, Version II<\/em>\u00a0(1930) and his self-portrait, c.1961, along with\u00a0<em>Winter Evening,\u00a0Calary<\/em>\u00a0(1964) by abstract and landscape artist Camille Souter and\u00a0<em>Attic Bedroom<\/em>\u00a0(date unknown) by Grace Henry were all purchased with the financial support of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The acquisitions bring to 15 the number of Keating works in Crawford Art Gallery\u2019s collection. Keating, born in 1889 in Limerick, is considered one of Ireland\u2019s leading painters of the first half of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of Keating\u2019s best-loved paintings, Men of the South, depicting men of the 2nd North Cork Brigade of the IRA awaiting an ambush, is in Crawford Art Gallery\u2019s collection. In November 2023 Crawford purchased The Window, a tender depiction of Keating\u2019s wife, May, which has attracted significant attention since its arrival to Cork.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Crawford Art Gallery is currently closed to the public for Transforming Crawford Art Gallery, an extensive restoration and redevelopment that is currently expected to be complete in 2027 but while the doors may be closed, staff continue to work on care of the collection of over 3,500 artworks. The collection is being decanted into secure storage throughout the winter of 2024, for the duration of the building\u2019s renovations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The newly acquired Keatings, Souter and Henry will go on public display after the gallery reopens.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a fantastic coup for Crawford Art Gallery, for the National Collection, and for Cork,\u201d Crawford Art Gallery director Mary McCarthy said of the acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe acquisition of Elijah and the Ravens and Keating\u2019s self-portrait are a thrilling moment for Crawford Art Gallery,\u00a0making\u00a0Crawford Art Gallery\u00a0an even more\u00a0significant custodian of public works by this much-loved and historically important Irish painter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Camile Souter and Grace Henry acquisitions\u00a0further\u00a0expand our collection of two very fine artists\u2019 works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrawford Art Gallery\u2019s doors might be closed to the public at present for redevelopment, but as these important acquisitions show, we are continuing to work\u00a0behind the scenes to enhance the National Collection\u00a0and we are grateful to our funders and in particular Minister Catherine Martin, our supporters and donors who enable us to continue this important work.\u201d Ms McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public will have an even more exciting and enriching visitor experience awaiting them when we re-open our doors following Transforming Crawford Art Gallery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Image:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-8108819181971150509m_8858939244622752815isPasted\"><em>Mary McCarthy, Director of the Crawford Art Gallery, was photographed at the unveiling of four new artworks acquired by the gallery for the National Collection in October 2024.\u00a0<\/em><em>She is pictured alongside Sean Keating\u2019s Elijah with the Ravens, Version II (1930), his self-portrait (c. 1961), and Men of the South, acquired by Crawford Art Gallery 100 years ago\u00a0<\/em><em>in April 1924.
