{"id":216,"date":"2021-12-06T16:29:25","date_gmt":"2021-12-06T16:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diplomat.ie\/?p=216"},"modified":"2021-12-06T16:29:25","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T16:29:25","slug":"dublin-arabic-film-festival-presented-by-dubai-duty-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diplomat.ie\/index.php\/2021\/12\/06\/dublin-arabic-film-festival-presented-by-dubai-duty-free\/","title":{"rendered":"DUBLIN ARABIC FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY DUBAI DUTY FREE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eighth annual Dublin Arabic Film Festival (DAFF) curated by\u00a0Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Jim Sheridan and film director, Zahara Moufid, will run online from the 8<sup>th<\/sup>-12th of December 2021.\u00a0Six feature length and eight\u00a0short Arab films will be shown on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dublinarabicfilmfestivalonline.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.dublinarabicfilmfestivalonline.com&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1638894023278000&amp;usg=AOvVaw13nqvYa0OyKmCFdpS9Hbv4\"><strong>www.dublinarabicfilmfestivalonline.com<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zahara Moufid and Jim Sheridan established DAFF in 2014 in a bid to allow Irish audiences the opportunity to enjoy some of the best new and classic Arab films ever made. The festival, which has been presented and supported since its inception by Dubai Duty Free, has had some very high-profile actors, filmmakers and celebrities involved with it over the years. Legendary, actor Omar Sharif launched the inaugural edition of DAFF in 2014. Other famous faces who have supported the festival over the years have included The Edge, actress\u00a0Fionnuala\u00a0<em>Flanagan<\/em><em>,<\/em>\u00a0singer Damien Dempsey and Liam Cunningham of \u2018Game of Throne\u2019s\u2019 fame.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, the festival has included several films which explore the lives of Arab women who are often restricted by the confines of their own families and the society in which they live. These films not only shine a light on the lives of Arab women but also gives audiences the chance to see the work of some of the most prominent female Arab filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palestinian features\u00a0include\u00a0two fantastic feature films\u00a0<strong><em>Emwas: Restoring memories\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and<em>\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Roshmia<\/em>,\u00a0<\/strong>a feature documentary by Salim AuJabal<strong>\u00a0<em>Emwas: Restoring memories\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>is<\/em>\u00a0a personal film that follows the journey of the director, Dima Abu Ghoush, as she rebuilds her demolished hometown from the memories of its people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>Roshmia<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is about<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>an elderly Palestinian refugee couple in a final standoff with the Israeli authorities to maintain their lifestyle in Roshmia, the last natural valley in Haifa. Yousef and his wife Amna, who originally descends from the gypsies of Palestine, have lived in a shack all alone in their eighties since 1956 in what seems to be a life of serenity, far away from the loudness of modern life. Life remains peaceful in Roshmia until\u00a0the Israeli authorities endorse a new road project and order to confiscate their land, demolish their shack and throw them out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audiences will also be treated to two\u00a0Egyptian features films<em>\u00a0<\/em>by filmmakers Amir Ramses\u00a0and Ahmed\u00a0Rashwan. A selection of\u00a0short films\u00a0throughout the festival will\u00a0showcase some great new emerging talent including\u00a0work\u00a0by young Moroccan filmmaker,\u00a0Abdelali\u00a0Debbagh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the highlights of the festival this year is the film<strong><em>, Cha\u00efbia<\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em>\u00a0directed by Youssef Britel which tells the true store of Cha\u00efbia Talal,\u00a0the famous Moroccan painter who spends her childhood and adolescence in poverty. Illiterate and poor her life is cruel and hard. She was married and widowed with a child by the age of 15 after her family forced her to marry a 70-year-old man. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnet.com\/artists\/chaibia-talal\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.artnet.com\/artists\/chaibia-talal\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1638894023279000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1SKsmtq-yis-5YTf4ojROs\">artist<\/a>, whose colourful and abstract works have been likened to those of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2020\/01\/290568\/auction-house-picasso-painting-morocco-clean-water\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2020\/01\/290568\/auction-house-picasso-painting-morocco-clean-water\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1638894023279000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3AsBDj2b_x_r4SA3OTOlqx\">Pablo Picasso<\/a>\u00a0is considered to be one of the greatest Moroccan painters of the 20th century. Her style depicted women through vibrant displays of colour and established her as one of Morocco\u2019s most well-known and respected artists. This movie is screened for the francophone audience in Ireland, free of charge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two special film screenings have been sponsored by the DAFF cultural partner, the Chester Beatty Library and they include\u00a0<strong><em>\u2018<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>It Must Be Heaven\u2019<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><em>\u2018Luxor\u2019<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which will both be free to watch on the Dublin Arabic Film Festival website.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim\u00a0Sheridan, DAFF President said, \u201cThe medium of film provides us with an escape mechanism and in these strange times it\u2019s important to be able to escape, even in our minds and even if just for a short time. We were very hopeful to have the event in person this year, but unfortunately due to Covid it is once again a virtual affair. However, even though people can\u2019t few these films in person in the cinema our films can still be enjoyed online by our virtual audience from the comfort of their own home. We hope DAFF, its films and the stories and people they portray will continue to inspire audiences and help bring a welcome and creative distraction from the current situation.\u201d\u00a0Zahara Moufid, DAFF Director added, \u201cThe main goal of the festival this year is to give a voice to Arab women and to female Arab filmmakers, we hope the films and the stories they tell will let their work be seen and their voices be heard\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colm McLoughlin Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free, the presenting sponsor of DAFF offered his congratulations to the festival organisers and said, \u201cI am very impressed with the innovation and determination shown by both Jim Sheridan and Zahara Moufid in proceeding with DAFF in these challenging times.
