Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has today\u00a0launched a major \u20ac15 million fund that will support dozens of outdoor adventure projects across the country.<\/p>\n

The 2022 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) will see the development of natural amenities such as our mountains, lakes, beaches, bogs, walkways, greenways and blueways.<\/p>\n
\n
The Scheme, which saw its funding increased by Minister Humphreys as part of the Budget, will place a particular focus on developing adventure tourism in Rural Ireland.<\/p>\n
It will support activities such as hiking, mountaineering, kayaking, swimming and cycling, which were especially popular among families throughout the Pandemic.<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s announcement builds on the commitment under \u201cOur Rural Future<\/em>\u201d to continuing the investment in infrastructure that caters for the growth in both local and international outdoor adventure tourism.<\/p>\n \n The projects that will be supported under ORIS are designed to benefit the health and wellbeing of the communities in which they are located.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Launching the 2022 scheme Minister Humphreys said:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI am delighted to announce the launch of the 2022 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. To date, the Scheme has provided\u00a0funding of over \u20ac87 million for more than 1,200 projects nationwide.<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThe facilities and amenities funded under this Scheme represent a tremendous long-term asset for rural communities and visitors alike and are clear examples of the impact that \u201cOur Rural Future\u201d is having across Ireland.<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s why I have allocated \u20ac15 million to the Scheme as part of the biggest ever financial support package for Rural Ireland which I secured in Budget 2022.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n The Minister continued:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2018\u2018Over the past two years we have all become even more aware of the importance of outdoor pursuits and activities.\u00a0 Today\u2019s announcement means that we will continue to invest in our natural amenities so even more people can enjoy the benefits.<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cSo, I\u2019m urging applicants to be bold and ambitious with their proposals \u2013 so that we can continue to further develop adventure tourism to the benefit of our citizens.<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cI want to acknowledge the support of our partners, F\u00e1ilte Ireland, who have once again come on board to contribute to the funding of successful projects under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n ORIS provides funding for the development of new and existing outdoor recreational infrastructure in rural areas.\u00a0 It funds trails, cycleways, blueways,\u00a0bridleways, as well as outdoor amenities located near rivers, lakes and beaches.<\/p>\n The 2022 scheme will provide investment ranging from \u20ac30,000 for small scale projects and up to \u20ac500,000 for large scale projects.\u00a0 This is an alteration on last year\u2019s scheme, which provided funding ranging from \u20ac20,000 instead of \u20ac30,000.<\/p>\n \n The Scheme is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development in partnership with F\u00e1ilte Ireland and projects applications will be accepted under the following Measures:<\/p>\n \n Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI welcome the continued partnership between F\u00e1ilte Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development on the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. Opening up the outdoors for cycling, hiking, walking and other pursuits for domestic and international visitors will play an important role in tourism recovery. The range of projects funded throughout Ireland under this scheme to date are excellent and support Ireland\u2019s ambition to be a renowned year round destination for activity tourism.
