Today (Wednesday 27th\u00a0<\/sup>September), the Fair Fees Campaign Group of the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI)\u00a0gathered\u00a0on the steps of the\u00a0Department of Justice to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0the groundswell of support for a reduction in the Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card fee to the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee.<\/p>\n

\n

The\u00a0group is\u00a0calling\u00a0on Minister McEntee to\u00a0reduce\u00a0the current fee of \u20ac300\u00a0to a level more in line with similar fees charged for other state registrations such as a passport (\u20ac75) or driver\u2019s licence (\u20ac55).<\/p>\n

\n

A Department of Justice representative today accepted the petition on behalf of the Minister at her office on St. Stephen\u2019s Green, Dublin.<\/p>\n

\n

With many anticipating measures in Budget 2024 to ease the burden of the cost-of-living crisis, migrants are calling on the Minister to look at IRP fees which are\u00a0wildly disproportionate\u00a0and are forcing them to make difficult choices and go without essentials.<\/p>\n

\n

Two representatives from the Fair Fees group addressed the supporters gathered at the Department of Justice today.<\/p>\n

\n

Lijie Shao said \u201cI came to Ireland over ten years ago to study. I\u2019m working as a tutor and I\u2019m a mother. Just like many others, I\u2019ve got bills to pay, rent, childcare, utilities \u2013 and then on top of all that we must pay this fee just for living here? It\u2019s so unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senthil\u00a0Ramasamy\u00a0added \u201cThis petition we\u2019re handing over today shows a huge amount of support for a reduction in these fees. They are placing an additional and unfair financial burden on migrants. We believe that everybody deserves to be treated equally and fairly in the country they call home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

The Fair Fees group cannot see any justification for the fee to be so high. It costs the state just \u20ac20.44\u00a0[1]\u00a0to issue each card and other countries charge much less for similar services.<\/p>\n

\n

Most people living in Ireland from outside the EU are forced to pay this fee every year, some even more often. Last year alone (2022) the government collected \u20ac58 million from people paying IRP card fees\u00a0[2].<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
