Catherine Martin, T.D., Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, has today\u00a0l<\/span>aunched\u00a0Coimisi\u00fan\u00a0na\u00a0Me\u00e1n\u2019s\u00a0Gender, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

The Strategy\u00a0is informed by the\u00a0recommendations of the\u00a0Future of Media Commission and by the lived experiences of those working within our media sector.\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

The Minister has welcomed the\u00a0Strategy\u00a0as a\u00a0key\u00a0step towards ensuring\u00a0the media industry\u00a0is\u00a0accessible, inclusive and representative of our society.\u00a0\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Launching the Strategy\u00a0at\u00a0Coimisi\u00fan\u00a0na\u00a0Me\u00e1n\u2019s\u00a0offices\u00a0today,\u00a0Minister Martin\u00a0commented:\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n

\u201cThe issue of gender parity and equality has been, and continues to be, a priority for me as Minister.\u00a0A diverse and inclusive media sector is essential for our society, for our democracy and for our cultural development. It is vital that our media reflects the many and varied voices of our society<\/i>.\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n

This strategy represents the first step of a longer-term process to address the far-reaching societal issues we face such as gender equality,\u00a0the portrayal of negative stereotypes and the barriers to access and opportunity.\u00a0This strategy will work towards ensuring a more equal media landscape and one which provides a diversity and a plurality of voices to our national discourse, boosts opportunities within the sector and reflects the society it represents\u201d.<\/i>\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

\u201cThe publication today of a Gender, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy for the media sector in Ireland is an important step towards ensuring that our audio and\u00a0audiovisual\u00a0media sector is accessible, inclusive, diverse and representative of contemporary Ireland.\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

An\u00a0Coimisi\u00fan\u00a0will continue to encourage initiatives to enhance the diversity of the media sector in Ireland and through our own sectoral development and funding schemes, will support activities aimed at making the media sector in Ireland more inclusive.\u2019\u2019<\/i>
\n<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

The Strategy, which is the first of its kind for the industry, will aim to foster a culture of equality and inclusivity in\u00a0the\u00a0media and is the result of\u00a0an extensive programme of\u00a0work by\u00a0Coimisi\u00fan\u00a0na\u00a0Me\u00e1n\u00a0over the\u00a0past number of\u00a0years\u00a0incorporating\u00a0wide consultation with\u00a0key sectoral\u00a0representatives.<\/p>\n
