Customers please be aware that the carriage of e-scooters on public transport will not be permitted from Monday 7th<\/sup>\u00a0October in line with\u00a0recent guidance issued by the National Transport Authority (NTA)\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

This restriction will apply to e-scooters but not e-bikes or mobility scooters.<\/p>\n

E-scooters are a relatively new product and were unregulated in Ireland until earlier this year. The quality control of their construction is therefore not as mature or well developed as e-bikes and mobility scooters, which have been regulated for longer. The tested batteries of e-bikes and mobility scooters do not pose the same level of risk.<\/p>\n

The restriction applies on Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann, Dublin Bus, Bus \u00c9ireann, Go-Ahead Ireland, Luas and TFI Local Link.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>It is subject to periodic review by the NTA and the transport operators.<\/p>\n

Safety concerns in relation to many lithium-ion batteries<\/strong><\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

The guidance is prompted by safety concerns in relation to many lithium-ion batteries which are commonplace in such devices. These batteries are known to develop internal faults, leading to overheating and combustion. This has resulted in recent fires and thick black smoke on board public transport in\u00a0Madrid<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Barcelona<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Similar restrictions are already in place in\u00a0Berlin<\/a>,\u00a0Barcelona<\/a>, and the\u00a0UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
